SPECIAL
LANGUAGE
PROGRAM
FOR THE
SOCIAL SCIENCES
HEREDIA,
COSTA RICA
May 24th - June 11th 2004
|
|
|
|
|
|
The increased immigration
of Latin Americans and their subsequent integration into North American society
have led to newly emergent demands on the social service system. This
factor, coupled with the need for cultural sensitivity, has led to a greater
demand for psychologists and social workers with a working knowledge of Spanish
as well as an understanding of Latin American culture. An excellent
way to improve both language skills and cultural awareness is to study in
a Spanish speaking country.
For this reason, CPI has designed a special
three-week seminar directed to professionals working in the social services.
The seminar includes Spanish classes, professional talks, discussion groups
and informational visits to the local social service community.

During
Week One, to allow participants to establish a base in the language, Spanish
classes are the only activity schedules. Students are placed according
to level based upon a written exam and oral interview. The maximum class
size is four students per class. Small class size makes for optimum
learning as students receive specialized attention from their professor.
Morning classes concentrate upon grammar and conversation, the necessary elements
for communication. Professional vocabulary and practice interviews are
also introduced during the first week. After classes there are optional
cultural activities, such as: Latin dance class and cooking class and "noches
tipicas."

Professionals are invited
to speak to seminar participants at the CPI campus. Initial discussions
focus on the Costa Rican social service system in order to provide a more
ample understanding of the Latin American system´s structure and workings;
also addressed are the similarities and differences between the North American
and Latin American systems.
As the seminar progresses speakers discuss the social problems
specific to a developing nation, which include: domestic violence, home abandonment,
teenage pregnancy, street
children, drug abuse and the consequences of extreme poverty. At the
conclusion of the seminar speakers transition to methodology, techniques and
interventions utilized in Costa Rica as well as analyses of specific case
studies and interview techniques.
